What is your earliest memory? Do you remember your first love? Have you ever listened to the heartbeat of a loved one?
For me, my earliest memory is about music. Always being around music, it was also first love. The rhythm of one's heartbeat that makes you feel safe and secure is a rhythm that imprints on you, like the best, most soothing harmonies that one may experience. As long as I can remember writing, and music has been the only constant. The ability to go off to a far away land or perform on the same stages as some for the greats has become a superpower of mine that in full transparency, developed and was cultivated through trauma. The emotions that are expressed through poems or song can be articulated more effectively then a spoken conversation and understood universally. Story telling through song predates written language in many cultures and holds the history of the subject spoken about. The healing and reassurance received through music can be like no other.
There were a few artist and executives that helped guide me through hard times in life by the stories of vulnerability, artistry, versatility, and vocal dynamics amongst other qualities. Coming from not only a line of singer/songwriters, and performers, but life long lovers of Michael Jackson who made me feel not so alone. Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Anita Baker, and Monica are vocal bibles to me. Sylvia Rhone was such an inspiration of leadership while Cece Winans showed me how a song can be applicable to people across genres. Where Janet Jackson showed me how to be an artist. With amazing groups such as The Supremes, Envogue, and Boys II Men, taught me about harmonies. As artists turned executives, we know how to treat artist.
